WDS repeater with DD-WRT and Chillispot
« on: April 20, 2010, 01:58:17 pm »
Hi,
i have an hotspot, working fine, with a WRT54GL router, DD-WRT v24sp2 firmware and chillispot enabled.
The remote WLAN network is : 192.168.182.0/24
The Dhcp interface is actually set on eth1.
The wifi is separated from the lan bridge (option:enable).

Now, i have another WRT54GL device, same firmware, and i need to extend the signal of the main router. I read other posts in this forum, very useful for me, with some indications about "how to setup a WDS repeater with chillispot", and i tried some configurations on the WDS repeater but the exteded network still not working.

About the WDS Repeater, i have some questions:
1) the SPI firewall must be enabled or disabled ?
2) the local ip address (in WDS repeater) MUST be in the same class of the WLAN network ? (e.g.192.168.182.200 ??) and about subnet/gateway/dns ?

Can i find a guide to setup my WDS repeater with DD-WRT and with Chillispot, step by step ??
(.....a "guide for dummies".. :-)

Thank you very much for your help, and best regards.

Hi

I've never setup WDS on dd-wrt.
But from what I've understood, WDS extends the bridge between LAN and WLAN.
So you must first disable "separate wifi from lan" and select the wifi/lan bridge in the chillispot dhcp interface (I don't know its name in v24)
Test if your configuration still works before setting up WDS (from both LAN ports and wifi)

Disable the ddwrt dhcp server then setup WDS.

In the repeater, disable the WAN and the firewall.
The local ip address of the repeater doesn't really matter I think. It is just useful to get access to the web management interface.
In the howtos I've seen, they are set to 192.168.1.x (in the lan subnet)
Note that you shouldn't have any gateway/dns in the LAN side, only in the WAN side.

Hope this helps.

what chillispot "dhcp interfaces" choice do you have?
which one have you tried?

You have to choose the LAN bridge

DHCP Interface is set to : eth1
I'll try to set it to LAN.
Tomorrow i'll send you my feedback.
Thank you very much for your suggestion !!!

retegraf are you connecting the repeater router wirelessly? When you mean it works in LAN mode are both routers using LAN interface or just the repeater router? So you can access worldspot with both routers? I'm doing something pretty similar to you so that's why I'm asking so many questions. ;D

WDS repeater are connected wirelessly of course.

But if you can have a wire, it is much better. You just have to connect the second router as a transparent access point.
