Setting up hotspot dd-wrt v24sp2
« on: June 19, 2010, 06:06:22 am »
Hi all,
I'm trying to set up worldspot on dd-wrt v24sp2 with chillispot. I've successfully use Sputnik and hotspot system. However, worldspot is obviously better so presumably so worldspot should also work simply ennough. I've entered the setting in accordance with those on my cofig page of profile. As you know there are extra fields and I have left the default values for those such as DHCP interface (eth0). That pretty much being the only field varying from v23 of dd-wrt. However it just isn't working for me.  For the address of a name server I'm giving the ip of my ip's Name server 1 but have also tres the two ip addresses of the open DNS's from the set up page to no avail.  I apply the settings and when I then try and connect via wifi ot just simply won't work. Is there something I should be changing  from the settings of v23? If anyone can help or give me an example it would great.
Thanks on advance.

Hi

In ddwrt v24, the dhcp interface name is the dependant of the hardware you have.
If it is a wrt54gl, eth1 should be the wifi interface.
For the dns, the opendns ip should be ok.
Please also make sure you connect the hotspot to the internet through the "internet" port, not the lan.

Hi thanks for the reply, I am using the WAN port for the internet so that should be fine.
I'm using the Lynksys WRT54G-TM, presumably the same story as the wrt54gl.
I won't be able to switch anything for a few hours, but I will change the interface from  eth0 to eth1 and use the open DNS. Hopefully that'll work. I'll let you know.
Thanks.

I have tried these settings. My settings completely match the config, I can connect to the net via the WAN port when chillispot is disabled but when enabled with these settings it just isn't working. I have been without the service for one month now. :-(
Any ideas?

Okay, I have now applied the settings as I assume to be correct. They are applied and router rebooted. I am connecting to the web as normal, no redirections. Does not seem to be going through the worldspot service.  ???

Okay now have it working. If anybody would like any help let me know. :-)
One question though what would be good download/upload limits and good download/upload rates?
Colin.

Hi
What values did you enter for the dns and the dhcp interface?

Quote
I can connect to the net via the WAN port
Does this mean that when you disable chillispot, you can connect to the internet via wifi provided by the dd-wrt?
What is the ip address you get on your client computer?

No, by getting access to the net via the WAN port. ie. Not using the LAN port as required by chillispot. Used eth1 and the open DNS IP.

Not sure why you'd fight with dd-wrt when Coova has pretty much the same functionality.
Plus there is a 1 line setup option that makes it super easy to setup a hotspot.

Define your hotspot first, then flash Coova, and configure

check their site www.Coova.org

(this is what I did)

I don't have any particular problems.

I am not particularly smart and yet I managed to improve the DD-WRT Wiki article on Chillispot:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Chillispot

It took a DAMN long time though  ;D So I hope you like it.
I think it answers all your questions. I read the above comments. Did you read the Wiki?

Coova is fine I suppose, if you want to use the OpenWRT interface which is not as mature or easy as DD-WRT

And if you do not need the other DD-WRT features. I don't use Coova.

Usually it's enough on a 16meg RAM router to not have the Web interface startup automatically.

This leaves enough RAM for chillispot to run effectively.

See the chillispot article.

You should also be using build 13064. Rock solid.
