WDS REPEATERS
« on: September 27, 2006, 04:08:48 pm »
How can I set the repeaters by WDS to extend the reach of the Hotspot?
I use the model WRT54GL as HOTSPOT and REPEATERS too.
All routers have DD-WRT v.23 SP2

Did not test that. But I know it is quite easy.
There are several howtos on the net.
DD-WRT wiki/forum and google will help more than me.

The problem is that Repeaters can access to internet without the chillispot.

 ???
That seems to be a configuration problem.
Will also look at this one day.

With Repeater clients can access to internet like on the LAN interface of Hotspot.
If in the Chillispot config DHCP Interface of the Hotspot I set "LAN & WLAN" Hotspot don´t work.

no there should be only one chillispot instance
WDS extend the wireless range. repeaters should have nothing configured. They only repeat.

WDS link is created on LAN.
Chillispot only works on WLAN and if I config the DHCP Interface of Chillispot to LAN & WLAN it don´t work.
How can I config it?

I don't know.
Sorry
You should look at DD-WRT forum/wiki or google.

I've successfully setup WRT54g WDS networks with DD-WRT and Chillispot.  The short answer is (I'm currently writing a more detailed description):

Setup base WRT as required, without enabling Chillispot.  Disable DHCP,  setup WDS, etc.

Setup remote WRT(s) as required.  Set LAN address to 192.168.182.XXX, where XXX is between 128-254.  I also set DHCP as forwarder to 192.168.182.1 (not sure if necessary, but it works for me).  Don't forget WDS configuration.

Now check network has successfully created WDS bridges (remember the base and remote WRT's are on different IP subnets, and there is no DHCP at the moment, so manually change your IP address to login into the web configurators.)

Once your happy with the network, configure Chillispot.  Note:  Once Chillispot is enabled, you won't be able to reach the Base WRT with a DHCP address.

Chillispot config requirements:
  • Don't separate the LAN and WLAN.
  • DHCP on LAN and WLAN.
  • In the additional Chillispot options:  dynip 192.168.182.0/25

That's my short answer.  As I said earlier, I'm writing a more detailed tutorial, but first I need to repeat what I did a few more times, to make sure I haven't missed any steps.

Hope this helps.

I'm currently trying find a solution to separate the LAN and WLAN on the base WRT, but I don't know enough (anything) about creating VLANs, interfaces and iptables.  I have managed to separate the two, and create a working WDS and Chillispot solution, but lost the LAN ports and the web configurator refused to update any changes.

BarkingDog....thanks for your details on setting up WDS.  I spent all day last Sunday testing WDS with 1-WRT54GS (using DD-WRT v23 sp2 for v4) & 1-WRT54G (using DD-WRT v23 sp2 micro version).

Here are some of the details that helped me get everything set up correctly:

1.)  Make sure that both routers use the same channel, ie. don't set channel selection to "Auto" as this will make each router automatically select a different channel.  (Can anyone verify this?)

2.)  WRT54G's work great for the remote router since the newer versions will only hold the "micro" version of DD-WRT and only require basic network & WDS settings.

3.)  One gotcha on the Base WDS router is to fully test the subnet and IP address you assign to the router and limit the size of this subnet.  For example, I set the router to its default 192.168.1.1 and manually set my wireless card to various addresses between 192.168.1.2 - 254.  I could then browse the Internet bypassing Chillispot/Worldspot.

My suggestion is to make the IP address of the router something like 192.168.XXX.YYY where XXX is a random # between 0 and 255 and YYY is something other than 1.  Limit the network size to a /30, 4 IP address network (a subnet mask of 255.255.255.252).

With this /30 network you'll have:
1 address for the network address,
1 address for the router (not default gateway in this example since it is not needed),
1 address to use for to connect to router for management/configuration,
and the last address is the network broadcast address.
(Am I on the right track here? - comments appreciated)

There is still a risk using this setup because of the 1 IP address still available, but it will take some effort to find that 1 open IP address.

4.)  There is 1 more "additional Chillispot option" I found in my readings.  I added: net 192.168.182.0/24 just under the dynip 192.168.182.0/25 option.

Like BarkingDog, I need to do more testing.  There are details at Chillispot.org on setting up WDS, but these details assume that you've installed OPEN-WRT instead of DD-WRT.  I'd love to know if anyone has had any luck using the instructions here:  http://www.chillispot.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1216&highlight=wds

I'd also like to know how many people are interested in step-by-step instructions on setting up a multiple router WDS system to increase wireless coverage.  I have only limited experience using WDS in an Apple Airport Extreme & Airport Extreme ITunes network at home.  I am trying to set up a Hotspot at a campground by placing routers in various places around a fairly large area.  I'd enjoy hearing if others have attempted to do anything similar and any issues encountered.

I confirm the following also works:

WRT54GL:
 - OpenWRT
 - Chillispot on LAN & WLAN
 - Only one required
 - Enter MAC addresses of the REPEATERS in the appropriate section (AutoWDS = Disabled)
 - Manually set WLAN channel

REPEATERS
 - Edimax 7206APg (= 'UltraWAP')
 - Mode = WDS. Enter MAC address of the Wireless interface (careful: there is more than one MAC on a WRT54GL)
