Another "behind a router" question
« on: September 27, 2006, 10:22:03 pm »
Hello there,

I have a linksys WRT54-GL router running DD-WRT v23 SP2.
This router is behind another router (let's call it SMC).
The SMC WAN port is connected to a cable modem, and receives a public IP via DHCP.
The SMC LAN IP is 192.168.2.1
Before trying your service, the Linksys used to be connected to the SMC via the LAN connection. WAN and DHCP on it were disabled and the local IP was 192.168.2.2.
This was quite handy, because I have one pc connected to a lan port of the SMC router, and another one connected to a lan port of the Linksys, I have also a laptop using the WLAN port of the Linksys. This way, they all could surf the web. And as they all were in the same range, file sharing and rdp and the likes were no problem as well (which is must for me).
I tried a lot of different things, but I couldn't get Chillispot working without connecting the Linksys via the WAN-port and assigning a LAN IP in another range than the SMC (I assigned it 192.168.1.1).
I tried DHCP first on the WAN side of the Linksys, but I couldn't get it to work (don't know why, my pc can get an ip from the SMC, so why wouldn't the Linksys get one?). So I assigned it a static ip (192.168.2.2).

This way, I got my hotspot up and running and all my pc's can surf the web now (thanks to your nice service, keep up the good work ;-)
But... I can't get them to see each other anymore :(

Is there any way I can make all my pc's see each other again, without losing the nice hotspot functionality on my wireless connection?

Anybody out there who has some clues?

Thanks in advance!

Can't you connect both PCs on the linksys lan ports?

I think the solution is to extend you wan port to use several ports of your linksys.
This is done in VLAN configuration.
You can assign your ports from the LAN to the WAN.
This way all your PCs are on the WAN side.

Warning: they will be reachable from your hotspot users unless you configure iptables.

One day I will find how to do this and post the result or link.

Actually no, that's not possible due to a lot of reasons which would go off-topic here ;-)
Isn't there a possibility that the Chillispot uses the LAN as the internet connection instead of the WAN, then all my problems would go away...

I just want one local wired network (range 192.168.2.*)  and one wireless network (range 192.168.182.* aquired from chillispot).
Maybe later (v24) I can add another virtual wireless network in the same range as my LAN to connect my own laptop.
It would be very nice that I can connect to any router wired or wireless with my own pc's without being bothered by the Chillispot and still have all my functionality like I was used to, but other wireless users could only connect using the Chillispot.

Thanks for any answers, suggestions, remarks, ...

This is exactly what I proposed.
Extending the WAN vlan will make both your PCs in the same ethernet space.
