Worldspot.net
« on: October 18, 2006, 06:53:54 pm »
I'm new to this so I apoligize if this has already been asked. I did not see it in my search?
Please do not take this wrong......just concerned about security

How does Worldspot.net benefit from these hotspots? Who pays for the server? Support?
What info does worldnet capture? Who is worldspot.net?

Everything looks great very impressed.

Can I setup my own server to do what worldspot.net does? What software is it?

Thanks

J

Hi, welcome!
Lots of questions!
Quote
How does Worldspot.net benefit from these hotspots?
Worldspot is actualy free because it is still in testing/development phase.
I have to implement some remaining features before the ticket system will not be charged.
It will also have online billing feature with revenue sharing (or not).
However, it will remain free for free hotspots, just because I like the idea of free hotspots.
There might be also other services proposed when all these features get implemented.

Who pays for the server?
Me on my personal funds. There will be also a backup server soon for high availability.

Support?
I'm doing the support as much as I can through this forum. I'm trying to make the hotspot setup as simple as possible.

What info does worldnet capture?
Worldspot will not communicate any email to anyone to respect privacy. (not even to hotspot owners unless required to)
Worldspot logs all accounting that chillispot gives: the history you get + mac addresses.
They are automaticaly backed up in multiple places.
The goal is to identify as much as possible your hotspot users in case of wrong usage of your hotspot.
However the email identification has its limits.
I'm thinking about new ways of identification validation which will be implemented later.

Who is worldspot.net?
Worldspot is actualy me.  ;)
I'm a french electrical engineer. I'm in the process of setting up a legal business structure. (that is also why worldspot is still free)

This is not planned. However, if you have a project, you can contact me by mail or private message for a proposition.
The software is written by me (in python)

I appreciate your honesty. I wish to also say thank you for providing this service.

I am trying to setup hot spots for businesses and looking for a solution.

So was this completly written by you or have you taken chillisoft and continued making modifications?

Have you seen www.sput*nik.com ? Looking to do something like this!

I guess I'm still learning the process and setup.

These are my thoughts on how I would like it to work.

AT the hotspot location there will be no pc. There will be DSL/Cable Modem that i will connect router with open wrt or ddwrt?
I would like to preconfigure the router and then with my laptop complete the configuration.
Is this possible? Suggestions?

I would like to use worlspot.net or something like it to setup the hotspot webserver side for multiple businesses? Can this be done. Can I use worldspot.net? Options? I do not expect you to do this for free.........trying to reduce my overhead.

This is my business plan for HOTSPOTS types

FREE - Simple access gained by registering.
PAYPAL Pay per hour - 1 HR, 2HR 4 hr, 8hr , full day. block of time
TICKETS - Same tickets based on the above breakdowns except these tickets will be given out at the location. Good for only that day.

I want to limit the requirment of actually physically going to the location for support? Can this be done?

Any feedback wil lbe greatly appreciated?

How Can I help you?

TY

J.

I hope worldspot will fit your needs. It is also designed for WISP operators

The web part was written from scratch. Of course I'm using several open source ressources.

Of course I know them. They are the main competitor. I hope that worldspot will simply be better and cheaper.

This is actually how worldspot hotspot system works. Once configured and installed, the hotspot is managed though the internet.

Yes you can do it already. There is 2 cases:
If you manage the hotspot entirely (you pre-print the tickets yourself and sell them to the hotspot place owners (your clients) through conventionnal mail), then you can use worldspot now. Simply setup multiple hotspots under your own account. You can also get your tickets to work globally on all your hotspots. In this case, you are the WISP. The problem today, is that only you will have access to the hotspot account.
If you need that your clients (hotspot places) manage the hotspot by themselves, this will be possible in the future. Another user asked for that functionality (2 levels of login), but I might need your help to understand your exact needs. In this second case, your are more a solution reseller. Worldspot will have interresting solutions for resellers.

Today you have free and ticket accesses. Paypal will come soon I hope. There will be 2 online billing solutions:
-You will use your own paypal account (customers will pay to you directly and you will be charged a monthly fee)
-or a revenue sharing solution. (This is much more complicated to implement)

This is the goal. You should not need to go to the location. All ticket management is made on the internet.
However, there will be 2-3 next features that will require the hotspot reconfiguration:
- high availability: Automatic monitoring of the hotspot with automatic failover.
- Online billing requires that your unauthenticated users can access paypal services.

I intend to make a customized worldspot firmware that will be extremely easy to setup with all the features above.

I need feedback on the worldspot service. I wish that worldspot meets the needs of a majority of customers. To do that I have to understand these needs. However, I won't be able to fulfill all of them because of time.

I hope that you find the worldspot service useful.
