alias name in MAC ticket
« on: November 09, 2006, 08:35:11 pm »
I need to add an alias name to mac tickets.  Anyone who connects to hotspot see the table of other connected users to this hotspot and can open macs tickets.
It´s a big problem of security.

sniffing mac addresses is VERY easy. If you can change your mac address, then you know how to sniff them.
Mac address authentication is really known to be unsecure. The only secure way of connection is WPA radius but not easy to setup.

I will detect that it is mac address and change the report. Do you want that it is hidden only for hotspot users?

I want that mac tickets could be seen like hotspot connected users but without seeing the mac number.
It is possible to add a name to be seen when connected?

do you want to specify a name per mac address? A little bit complicated.
I propose: 'user'

I have made some test.
If anyone could see the last four digits of MAC ticket like now it could be easy to spy WIFI clients and identify the complete MAC when connect to the hotspot. To clone MAC is easy too.
It would be better to associate a name/login to the MAC tickets.
It is possible to do it?

If you can spy the wifi and all the mac addresses, why would you care about these 4 last digits?
I know that cloning mac addresses is quite easy. This is why I would not recommended to use unlimited mac address tickets.

MAC tickets are designed for devices that don't have web browsers.

How (when) would the mac address be assigned a name? at ticket creation? What for?

The feature you would like (if I understand well), is that people would preregister their mac address and associate it to their user account. But then, how to choose a ticket of whatever?

I don't really see how exactly you would like it to be.

Note: I already planned to implement secure hotspot solutions based on WPA and/or VPN. Just it will be done (much) later...

We are not being understood completely. I think that in the table of connected users to hotspot MAC tickets could be showed like an established name.

Example:
m:PSP1

Do you understand me now?

I understand now.

It need some more storage in the database for a feature that I don't find really useful.

A way to implement it could be that any ticket could be associated to a MAC (with autoconnetion or not) or not associated to a MAC.

With this method tickets could be forced to be used in only one hardware WIFI client if admin of hotspot wants it.

I have other very important feature to do before.
I will start online billing system for both the hotspot users and owners.
It will take some time.

We'll talk again about that later.
Thanks
